project numero uno: teensy weensy terrariums!

I've decided that I need a hobby. The problem with that is that I'm not particularly good at anything, so I've been tossing ideas around in my head for weeks about this. I finally broke down a created a Pinterest account (the greatest bad idea I've had in ages) and now I have so many ideas that I don't know what to do with them all. I've been google-obsessing over terrariums for months and decided that I should give it a go since I had such good luck with my outdoor plants this summer (good luck meaning that I didn't kill them all). Currently all I've got is this ridiculous son of a bitch and he's making a huge mess on my dining room table.

See, big ol mess!

Anyway, this is how I made my very first terrariums, and it cost me less than $25!
Step one : my roommate ordered me some adorable little plants from Amazon.com! I'm using air plants, or Tillandsia if you're fancier than I. I guess that means it only cost me about $7, since he sprung for the plants. Anywho, they're great because they require NO SOIL. None. Zero. Maintenance is as simple as soaking them in water once a week for 30 minutes.
Step two : I hunted around various dollar stores until I found some containers and decorations that I liked.

This cost me $6.52, the black sand I already had.
Step three : I made sure the containers and rocks were clean! You never know what might've happened to them at the dollar store!
Step four : make a giant sandy mess on the counter and layer the containers exactly the way I want them. It took me about 17 tries because I'm awfully picky.

I still haven't cleaned the counter, in case you were wondering. There is sand absolutely everywhere! So, this is how they turned out pre-plants.

And, once my darling little air plants arrived, I rearranged the rocks a few more times, soaked the plants, let them air dry and stuck em in!

In conclusion, I am in love! I can't wait to see what these little guys do as they mature! They get colorful and make babies, so if I can keep them alive, I should never have to buy any more of them again!
